Hampton University
Proton Therapy Institute to Host Free Health and
Wellness Expo
May 15, 2010
Hampton, Virginia. - In
honor of Men’s Health Month, the Hampton University
Proton Therapy Institute (HUPTI) will host a Health
and Wellness Expo on Saturday, June 19th from 11a-3p,
on-site at 40 Enterprise Parkway in Hampton.
The goal of the expo
is to encourage the community to be proactive in their
health by focusing on ways to reduce risks for cancer
and other diseases by:
- Not smoking or
help to quit
- Making healthy
eating choices
- Having regular
health screenings
- Watching the scale
- Being active in
the gym, yoga or other activity, three times per
week
HUPTI will host a
cancer prevention and proton therapy seminar at 12
noon with lunch provided by Jason's Deli. The seminar
will feature Christopher Sinesi, M.D., medical
director, HUPTI, and former proton therapy patients.
Tours and children's activities will be available
throughout the day. To register for the seminar or
tour, please visit
www.hamptonproton.org/events
or call 757.251.6814, opt. 1.
HUPTI is partnering
with area healthcare networks to provide a variety of
free screenings. PSA’s (prostate-specific antigen
test) will be offered by Bon Secours. Men will also
have the option of DRE’s (digital rectal exams),
provided by the Tidewater Physician Multispecialty
Group.
According to the
Virginia Cancer Registry, Hampton Roads leads the
nation in prostate cancer deaths. The U.S. Food and
Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of the
PSA and DRE to help in early detection, at which time
men often experience no symptoms of the disease.
Other vital
screenings such as cholesterol, blood pressure, body
mass index (BMI), vision, stress and digital
computerized foot scans will also be available. Health
vendors will provide a wide range of information on
topics such as smoking cessation, yoga techniques,
proper diets, health and fitness, etc.

sponsorship information, please contact Sarita Scott

treatment rooms. The actual treatment time lasts only
60 seconds. HUPTI will treat prostate, breast, brain,
lung, pediatric and other cancers upon opening in
August.
