The 2012 Southeast
Collegiate Fitness Expo will be hosted in Blacksburg,
VA at Virginia Tech on February 25 & 26, 2012. This
2-day networking event allows student employees in
fitness programs from universities in the Southeast
and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States to come
together and share ideas, choreography, programs, and
friendships. |

The Fitness Expo is an
opportunity for students to teach other students and will
allow them to practice and enhance skills in public
speaking, time management, self-understanding, leadership,
service, innovation and professional development.
For the 2012 Fitness Expo,
there will be several tracks offered to help guide
attendees in choosing the sessions most appropriate to
feed their needs. Such tracks being offered are group
exercise, personal training, wellness, and a professional
track. The professional track is being added this year to
offer insight to fitness professionals, both novice and
advance, to incorporate ideas and allow networking to
occur at the management level. It will also allow those
interested in becoming a fitness professional to learn
more about furthering their education and following their
passion.
The theme for the 2012 Southeast Collegiate Fitness Expo
is “Inventing the Future of Fitness.” Derived from
Virginia Tech’s tagline “Invent the Future,” the theme
resonates in taking what we have learned and practiced in
the fitness field and making an imprint of where it is to
go in the future. They hope to implement the theme by
focusing the program initiatives on sustainability,
technology, and fitness tomorrow. By keeping the expo as
sustainable as possible, they hope to reduce waste costs
by: communicating through email, the website, and social
media rather than paper mailings; and providing expo
handouts on the website and reducing the amount of paper
printed for event. In addition to making the expo
sustainable, we hope to make our bodies sustainable by
selecting and offering sessions that promote fitness and
wellness as a long-term lifestyle commitment and not using
fitness as a “quick-fix.” In addition to sustainability,
the Fitness Expo we remain as technology-advanced as
possible. By a commitment to sustainability, they can
enhance our technology uses by reducing paper waste,
communicating via social media and the Internet, and
providing check-in and registration in a streamline and
efficient manner. Because of our theme of “Inventing the
Future of Fitness” and the initiatives of sustainability
and technology, it goes without saying that they
ultimately want to create a sense of fitness tomorrow,
today.
History
The Southeast Collegiate
Fitness Expo began at the University of Virginia under the
direction of Erica Perkins, former Fitness Director at UVA,
as a one-day choreography exchange in 1995. The
choreography exchange grew from a local networking event
to a larger scale expo, brining in master presenters,
provided continuing education credits/units, and enrolling
over 325 attendees. The 2012 Southeast Collegiate Fitness
Expo will be the 18th annual event and they hope it to be
the largest and most exciting yet.
Please note that Expo
